“Love will wreck your heart like a derailed train. So choo-choose your partner wisely.” - Jarod Kintz, This Book Has No Title

I've always been about the journey more than the actual destination and nothing is more comfortable for long distance travel than an overnight train unless you're on a private yacht or something .. The fact that it's budget friendly helps a great deal too. With this is mind we booked ourselves 2 Johannesburg to Cape Town one way tickets with Shosholoza Meyl.
This train trip could actually be one of the most inexpensive adventures Hanna and I have had so far. The tickets were R690,00 each. For this we got our own cabin (which could sleep 4 people) and paid an extra R60,00 each for 2 pillows each, blankets and sheets.

The food onboard was great, prices were even cheaper than most fast food establishments. Drinks prices were more than reasonable, I actually found it ridiculous when I overheard complaining about paying R13,50 for one of those 330ml coke cans, If I was running that service the can would be R20,00!

The greatest advantage of this trip was that we could get stretch our legs out and get a good night’s sleep.

I believe we left at 12:30pm and arrived in Cape Town at 16:00pm.. to be honest the trip didn't feel that long and I even managed to have a  hot shower to freshen up in the morning.

Pretty cool. Although I am in Cape Town and don't really go to Jhb I may have to change my mind and do this trip.

It's a great way to see parts of the country you wouldn't really get to see. I'm saving up to upgrade to a Rovos trip in the near future

If you have a friend or 2 it will be great, I'm hoping to do this trip again with my girlfriend in April/May.
Just note that there are no card facilities on the train so have cash with you. Oh and wear flip flops in the shower
